On Monday, May 12th, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard visited the Head Start Waimanalo Pre-Plus classroom. She spoke to the children about her job and where she works. The children had the opportunity to ask the Congresswoman several questions. They were curious about her family, if she likes swimming or drawing, and whether she has seen the movie “Frozen.” Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard read the book, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” to the children and they happily read along with her. Before saying goodbye, the children showed Congresswomn Tulsi Gabbard their garden and gave her a lauhala basket filled with vegetables and herbs they grew.

Employment Program Participant Appreciates “The Support and Encouragement” Offered

Anthony went to the Central District Service Center to obtain services to assist him in his efforts at securing employment. After joining the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program, Anthony was able to secure part-time employment as a cashier and server at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Although Anthony only works part-time, he is happy with his hours because it gives him time to volunteer and work on other things. He enjoys working at Popeyes because he likes meeting new people and also helping people. When asked what he liked about the Na Lima Hana program, Anthony responded, “The support and encouragement.” We would like to congratulate Anthony on reaching 90 days of employment at Popeyes!
As of April 30, the Central District Service Center had enrolled 66 participants in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program, 32 of which had found part or full time employment. The Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program, in conjunction with other HCAP services, has been able to support clients by providing bus passes, work clothes and shoes, glasses, and more.

Fatherhood Engagement Day

Photo of Fatherhood Day
Head Start Fathers took over Laie Head Start for a day. The Laie Head Start families were invited to attend a day of exploration, invention, creation, and science. Parent volunteers planned and coordinated with teaching staff to create educational activities. The children led the way as they created inventions out of recyclable items. Families also enjoyed a delicious cooking activity prepared the old fashion way. Children used baby jars to shake their ingredients and made whipping cream. Lastly, the class joined together to make predictions about how far different sized balloon rockets would travel. It was a wonderful sight to see such great support from parents in the classroom.

Congratulations, Jessica, Ana, and Le’a!

Youth Services Interns
Youth Services would like to congratulate three program interns who will be graduating this month with their Bachelors Degree in Social Work. Youth Services has been very fortunate to have them with the program for the last two years and we are honored to be part of their educational journey. We wish them well as they continue their journey to achieve bigger and better things.
