Head Start Keiki Show Off Their Simple Machines

The children of Head Start Keiki Country 1 held a culminating celebration after completing a study of simple machines. The keiki created a museum of their machines for their parents to view at drop-off time. Here, Dawson browses the museum with his father. Dawson proudly showed his father the scale he made with recyclable items, and demonstrated his knowledge by explaining that it was a lever.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Energy Credit Applications Accepted Until June 30

Applications for the federally-funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Energy Credit are being accepted at HCAP District Service Centers now through June 30, 2022. The LIHEAP Energy Credit helps qualifying households keep their power on by providing assistance with future electric or gas bill payments. HCAP staff will be busy processing applications throughout the month, as households can only apply for the Energy Credit during June. Last program year, HCAP assisted more than 1,200 Oʻahu households with utility payments through LIHEAP.

LIHEAP also offers an Energy Crisis Intervention option for households facing disconnection due to past-due gas or electric payments. This year, a new Water Crisis Intervention option is available through the Low-Income Home Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The Water Crisis Intervention is for households facing disconnection of their water or wastewater services. Applications for the Energy Crisis Intervention and Water Crisis Intervention are accepted year-round.

Applications for all LIHEAP and LIHWAP services must be submitted by mail to HCAP’s Central District Service Center, or dropped off at any of HCAP’s 5 District Service Centers on Oʻahu. Potential applicants may call their nearest HCAP District Service Center with any questions on eligibility and the application process. Hā Initiative Students Launch a Rocket

Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students at Kaʻiulani Elementary had fun getting outside to launch their own rocket. The students filled the bottom of the rocket with baking soda and vinegar. Then, they stood back and watched as they sent the rocket soaring high into the air!

Nā Lima Hana Client Gets Fresh Start with Full-Time Roofing Job

Joshua, a participant in HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services program, recently obtained full-time employment at a local roofing company. While participating in the Laumaka Work Furlough program to better his chances of finding permanent employment, Joshua came to Kalihi-Palama District Service Center seeking additional support for his job search. As part of an ongoing partnership, HCAP staff have been working with Laumaka Work Furlough program participants like Joshua to connect them with employment services.

Joshua was excited to find work and move forward with his life. Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services provided him with a Holo Card for transportation and helped him obtain a new identification card. Joshua began applying for general labor jobs, having previous experience in roofing, carpentry, and landscaping. Thanks to his determination, along with the support of HCAP staff and the Laumaka Work Furlough program, he found work as a roofer within weeks of enrolling in Nā Lima Hana. Joshua is now working full-time and will soon be able to receive benefits from his employer. He shared that he is very thankful for the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services program, which gave him the opportunities, guidance, and assistance to get his life back on track.
