Ready To Learn Program Provides Students with School Supplies

Central District Community Worker, Saane Moala assisted community residents in registering for the “Ready to Learn” program administered by Helping Hands Hawaii. The Ready to Learn program helps many low-income families with a school supply starter kit. For various reasons, numerous children begin each school each year with out school supplies. This program insures children have supplies to start with on the first day of school, helping to prepare them for a successful school year.

HCAP Staff and Clients Gain Valuable Tools to Engage in Community Action

Alex Santiago, through a collaboration with the Partners In Development Foundation, recently spoke to HCAP staff and clients about the Legislative process, the differences between advocating and lobbying, and how to empower and educate the communities we serve. In his presentation, Mr. Santiago focused on three key points: 1) how to engage the electoral, 2) how to mobilize and make a community’s voice effective in the Legislative process, and 3) how to maintain the community’s involvement. Mr. Santiago’s message regarding the importance of “Community Action” was well received as many of the attendees stated they had a better understanding of the significance of getting involved with the Legislative process. The information that Mr. Santiago provided will aid us in fulfilling our mission of “Providing opportunities and inspiration to enable low-income individuals or families to achieve self-reliance.” Mahalo to Alex Santiago for a great training!

Head Start Spring Fling

Head Start Wahiawa families were invited to attend a Spring Fling family engagement day. Parent volunteers planned activities that served as an extension to what the children are currently learning. There were five different activity stations, each covering a specific school readiness goal. One activity was a Build-A-Rainbow gross motor activity on the outdoor slide. The children slid down the slide, which was covered with paper, while holding crayons. Another activity was the trail mix cooking activity, where the children had to read the ingredients and identify the amount of each ingredient to place in their ziplock bags. Engaged parents with happy and healthy children made for another successful day of enriching the lives of our Head Start families.

LIHEAP Intake Aides Attend Training

HCAP recently hired 30 temporary Intake Aides for LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program), which officially kicks off on Monday, June 2, 2014, and runs for the entire month of June. The aides will assist with LIHEAP intakes by helping clients complete their applications. We would like to welcome everyone to our HCAP Ohana!
