Kumuhonua Resident Receives Vital Assistance in Gaining Permanent Housing
Michael was recently able to move into his own permanent housing after residing at the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) with the help of HCAP case managers, Makamae, and Jeanette from the Institute for Human Services.
Makamae, one of his case managers, provided valuable assistance by providing transportation for Michael to his new unit and ensuring that he had everything he needed to settle in comfortably. In addition to Makamae’s help, Jeanette also played a significant role in Michael’s story. With her assistance in securing a housing subsidy for Michael, he was able to afford the costs associated with his new home. Makamae and Jeanette’s expertise and commitment to helping those in need were vital in making Michael’s dream of obtaining a permanent home a reality and in making the transition a smooth and seamless process.
Moving into permanent housing may seem like a small feat to some, but for Michael, it meant coming a long way. After experiencing homelessness for an extended period of time, having a place to call his own brought him a sense of stability and security that he had been missing, marking a turning point in his life and the start of a new chapter.
Michael’s successes serve as a reminder of the incredible impact that the community may have on an individual’s life, and HCAP aims to be that source of support for its community. Thanks to the hard work and care of his case managers, Michael was able to achieve a significant milestone that will continue to positively impact him for years to come.

Kalihi ECS Client Completes Healthcare Education as a Single Mother
Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program has partners throughout the community that open up opportunities for struggling low-income families and individuals to become self-reliant. One of HCAP’s partners, Professional Healthcare Educators (PHE), referred Shirline to the ECS program for tuition assistance with its healthcare program.
Shirline is a single mother of two, working part-time to provide for her keiki. Shirline shared, “Working in the medical field is my passion. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, but due to lack of medical education from home (Chuuk, Micronesia) I could not make my dream of becoming a health care provider a reality.” She also stated that because she is a single mom, she is only able to work part-time and it is not easy to provide for her kids, especially with the high cost of living in Hawaiʻi.
Shirline contacted HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center seeking help to enroll in the PHE healthcare training. Kalihi-Palama staff enrolled her in the ECS program with her goal to finish her education in the medical field and to get a better job so that she can provide for her children. With the assistance of ECS, Shirline was able to start classes in August and received her certificate in September. Shirline is still taking classes and working part-time. She plans on using her certificate to look for a better paying job so she can become more self-reliant for her family.

HCAP’s Windward District Service Center Conducts Homeless Outreach
The Windward District Service Center staff participated in a homeless outreach in Hau’ula and Waimanalo this month. Staff walked the beaches and parks to introduce HCAP and its programs and services to the houseless.
It was a success, and staff made several appointments to follow-up with potential clients to assist with intake and to conduct family assessments for referrals to homeless and transitional shelters, emergency food assistance, medical services, and access to hygiene. The Windward District office will continue its outreach and work in the area each week to service the vulnerable population.
