Ka`alabots Excel In Table Competition at FLL District Competition

Ka`alabots
The Leeward STEM Exploration Center “Ka`alabots” competed in the FIRST LEGO League district competition on November 15th, 2014. There were four areas of competition: Core Values, Project, Robot Design, and Table Competition. The project chosen was “How do we learn to build a better Lego competition robot?” The Ka`alabots were fantastic in all areas, with four team members participating. The judges enjoyed the energy of the team and their positive spirit and enthusiasm. The area they excelled in was the table competition with their score improving with each round. They managed to have the second highest table score out of 14 teams. The Ka`alabots are looking forward to next year’s competition!

HCAP Head Start Classroom Makes Cards for Shriner’s Hospital

Head Start GivingTuesday
In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, HCAP Head Start children made handmade Thanksgiving cards to give out at Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

On Wednesday, November 20th, Head Start Kunia II & III Teacher Barbara Offerman, her teaching assistants and AmeriCorps VISTA Marissa Villegas worked together to help students make twenty holiday cards. Students were asked to draw a turkey with the outline of their hand and decorate the pages with their gratitude and creativity.

“It was such a pleasure to spend the afternoon with Barbara and the children,” said Villegas. “The energy of the kids is really prominent in the cards and I am really looking forward to delivering them to the hospital.”

The cards are scheduled to be dropped off to Shriner’s Hospital for Children on Monday, November 24th and will be passed out with Head Start’s Health Books.

A Successful Donation Drive for HCAP Youth Services

Youth Services Giving Tuesday
On Tuesday, November 18th, HCAP Youth Services (HYS) students and staff delivered twenty-three bags filled with donations to Next Step Shelter in Kaka`ako. In the weeks prior to the drop-off, students and HCAP staff were asked to donate and collect donations to spread the act of generosity wide and far.

The efforts made by the class were satisfying as they dropped off the goods to the shelter. After unloading the bags, HYS received a tour of the facility that showed the aspects of shelter life and how a shelter functions.

“It’s sad. There are young kids and families that you can see aren’t as fortunate as some of us,” said HYS student Anissa. Another HYS student, Cyrus, commented on their act of charity, stating, “It felt good to help the homeless because they don’t have all of the same luxuries.”

Overall, the joy in their act of giving was very apparent as many of them wore smiles on their faces. “I just know I did a good deed,” said HYS student Shawn. “I’m glad I had a chance to give something.”

When the shelter first opened nine years ago, HYS held a similar donation drive for all of the families at Next Step. Thanks to the current students’ motivation and hard work, HYS was again able to provide new or gently used towels, blankets, toiletries, and other various goods.

Hau`ula Head Start Children Embark on Community Field Trip

Head Start Field Trip
Hau`ula Head Start children and teachers took a community field trip to Foodland and Subway. They were able to tour the store with their friends and family. The different departments, like Meats & Receiving, demonstrated their job responsibilities. Following the tour of Foodland, they walked to Subway. At Subway, the kids were able to build their own healthy sandwiches. It was another successful community outing for Hau`ula Head Start. Mahalo to Foodland and Subway for teaching our children about their community!
