Kupuna Celebrate Thanksgiving

The Kalihi-Palama Kupuna Independent Life Series celebrated Thanksgiving this week. Participants shared what they were thankful for and took part in the #UNselfie project for #GivingTuesday.
Children from the Aiea 1 Head Start classroom made beautiful Thanksgiving cards for the kupuna. The kupuna loved the cards, and many of them said they appreciated the cards because they are far away from their grandchildren and unable to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families.

The kupuna also talked story, ate a delicious Thanksgiving meal and celebrated in style with music and crafts. The Kalihi-Palama staff also gave Holiday Gift Baskets to each attendee.

Holiday baskets are still available at the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center, so please call 808 -847-0804 if you or someone you know is in need of an extra bag of groceries over the holiday season.

HCAP Distributes Meals to Individuals and Families in Need

Leeward Homeless Outreach
For the second year in a row, HCAP staff from the Leeward District Service Center along with Head Start Family Advocates gathered to prepare meals for the homeless residents living in the Waianae Boat Harbor. On Tuesday, staff spent the early morning cooking and packing over 200 meals, then went into “the bush” to pass out the food. The residents were extremely grateful for the meal and wished the staff a Happy Thanksgiving.

In the afternoon, the staff worked together to distribute food from the Ohana Produce food distribution to over 200 individuals and families. The feelings of thanks and giving were evident through out the day.

STEM Students Learn to Cook

Students at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Central STEM Exploration Center have been learning how to cook. They have received instructions on how to cut vegetables, how to keep their workstations clean, and what herbs and spices go well with each other. They have learned how to detect certain spices by smell, and know which food they taste best with. The children have also been to the computer lab to look up different recipes for preparing saimin. They’ve found recipes for the standard soup preparation, but have also found a number of recipes for fried saimin.

A cooking professor from Honolulu Community College visited the center and showed the students the different tools used in cooking, and demonstrated how to properly use each tool. They learned to use a chopping board in conjunction with the cutting knife. They not only learned how to hold the knife, but how to hold the item being chopped as well. They learned how to use a potato peeler and even got a lesson on composting vegetable scraps. The students had a wonderful time learning how to cook and are looking forward to getting into the kitchen to cook some of the recipes they have been looking up on the computers.

Leahi District Staff do Outreach in Waikiki

Last weekend, the Leahi District Service Center staff attended the Saturday evening and Sunday morning mass at St. Augustine Church By The Sea in Waikiki. In front of the congregation, Leahi District Manager, Rachel presented HCAP information and shared a few success stories about clients who have benefited from HCAP’s programs and services. After mass, the staff met with the church members to talk more about HCAP services. This was a great time to get to know the Waikiki community and to reach out to those who are in need. Thank you to the Father Ben, Sister Cheryl and the Stewardship Council for allowing us to share information about HCAP’s services.
