After School Engineering Challenge

This week, the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program continued exploring the world of engineering with a transportation model activity. Students constructed rubber band-powered air trolleys on a line to model real-life methods of transportation, then experimented with winding the rubber band around the propeller and its effect on how far the trolley traveled. During each round of testing, the students wound the rubber band around the propeller a different number of times and recorded their results on a coordinate graph. These hands-on engineering challenges are a fun way to put physics concepts into practice and learn about real world applications beyond the classroom.

Now that they have learned the basics of engineering an efficient trolley, next week’s activity will challenge Hā Initiative students to construct a trolley that is both efficient and safe, using paper clip passengers to test their skills.

Making Healthy Choices with HCAP Head Start

With the holidays approaching, HCAP Head Start keiki are learning about making healthy food choices. At Wahiawā Pre Plus, a fun, hands-on grocery activity helped keiki to learn more about healthy eating. Students worked on their fine motor skills by cutting out pictures of different foods from grocery ads and gluing them onto paper plates, deciding which foods to place in the “healthy” and “not healthy” categories and explaining their opinions.

The keiki even offered up some nutrition advice to keep in mind this week, including,

“Carrots are healthy because they make your eyes sharp”

“Chocolate chip cookies have lots of sugar”

“Soda can make your tummy hurt”

Happy Thanksgiving!
