Mahalo to All Veterans

HCAP would like to take this time to thank all those who have proudly served our country! Happy Veterans Day.
Veteran Receives Assistance from Na Lima Hana
A few months ago, Michael came to HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center seeking Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) assistance as he had received a disconnection notice from HECO. At the time, Michael had no income and was getting help from friends and families. A U.S. veteran, Michael applied for VA benefits but had a hard time getting his claims approved.
Kalihi-Palama District Service Center staff not only offered Michael food items from their Emergency Food Pantry, they also referred him to the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Following Job Readiness Training, Michael obtained employment at Lion Coffee Cafe. Things are looking up for Michael, and Kalihi-Palama District Service Center is glad they could assist with his needs.
Windward District Service Center Establishes Partnership with Women’s Community Correctional Center

Windward District Service Center will work with the work furlough program established at Women’s Community Correctional Center. As part of the partnership, Windward District Service Center will provide services to the women who are seeking job readiness training, bus passes, and job placement services.
This partnership marks HCAP’s fifth work furlough program collaboration with the state Department of Public Safety. HCAP’s District Service Centers have been working with the Oahu Community Correctional Center’s Laumaka, the Module 20 Work Furlough Center, TJ Mahoney & Associates, and Ka Hale Ho’āla Hou No Nā Wāhine.
Leeward STEM Students Learn about Light and Pigments

The students at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program’s Leeward STEM Exploration Center, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, recently learned about the science behind pigments and how pigments determine the color of an object. Pigments are chemicals that absorb selective wavelength. They prevent certain wavelengths of light from being transmitted or reflected. Because paints contain pigments, when white light (which is composed of red, green, and blue light) shines on colored paint, only some of the wavelengths of light are reflected.
As part of the hands-on class activity, the students experimented with paint. They mixed cyan paint (cyan is a greenish-blue color) with yellow paint, resulting in green paint. The Leeward STEM Teacher explained to the class that they can only see green because both red and blue light are absorbed and only green light is reflected.
HCAP to Participate in #GivingTuesday

From now until November 27, 2018, HCAP will be holding its annual #GivingTuesday campaign to celebrate generosity throughout the giving season. As a calendar day dedicated to giving, #GivingTuesday creates a community that encourages others to give more, give smarter, and to celebrate the spirit of contribution. And on a more personal level here in the islands, #GivingTuesday embodies the spirit of Aloha. It’s a day that reminds us that we are an ohana and we must all work together to make positive change happen.
#GivingTuesday is on November 27, 2018. Please consider supporting HCAP on this day of giving. This year, HCAP has set up a #GivingTuesday fundraiser page on Facebook. As part of #GivingTuesday, Facebook will match your donation (they will provide matching funds of up to $20k per donor). Click here to donate to HCAP.
