HCAP Robotics Team Advances to the FLL State Competition with Second Place Finish
Last week, two robotics teams from HCAP’s Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program enthusiastically participated in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) competition. These teams were composed of Hā Initiative students from Ala Wai Elementary and Kaʻiulani Elementary in grades fourth to sixth. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time for all of the students to compete in a Lego League tournament. Events like these allow students to use hands-on learning to apply classroom curriculum to the real world and develop skills that can help them in the future. For approximately two months, these students dedicated themselves to preparing for the FLL tournament, receiving guidance from the Hā Initiative staff and HCAP’s Information Services (IS) Team. The students underwent evaluation in four different categories to determine their robots’ performance and their eligibility for the statewide FLL competition. Notably, Princess Kaʻiulani’s team secured second place and was invited to the state competition in December!
Such events provide students with a hands-on learning experience, enabling them to apply their classroom curriculum to real-world situations and develop skills that will benefit them in the future. The Hā Initiative also aims to create an environment for families and communities to get involved in their students’ learning. This past competition was a great example of family involvement, as there was so much support from the parents who watched the event and excitement from the Hā Initiative staff and volunteers.
HCAP would like to congratulate all of the students for competing in this challenging yet rewarding event! The Hā Initiative staff also sends a big mahalo to the IS Team for their consistent support in the classroom and for sharing their knowledge of coding and programming with the students.

Mother and Daughter Receive Tuition Assistance
Jennie was introduced to the Nā Lima Hana – Employment Core Services (ECS) program when her daughter discovered the numerous benefits that ECS had to offer while enrolling at HCAP’s Leahi District Service Center. The program’s potential for aiding those in search of a career change immediately piqued Jennie’s interest. She decided to visit the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center to explore ECS and seek assistance with tuition costs for her vocational training.
With her application successfully approved, Jennie secured valuable support for her vocational training journey, including tuition assistance, a monthly HOLO Card, and essential materials required for her classes. Jennie is eager to start on her new career path and has already begun her phlebotomy classes, working towards obtaining her certification. HCAP staff at Kalihi-Palama District Service Center wholeheartedly wish both Jennie and her daughter the best, as they work to complete their programs and embark on a path towards achieving their educational and career goals.

Head Start Learns about Pets
The Head Start keiki at Pohakea chose “Pets” as their topic to study and investigate. They employed their logic and reasoning skills while learning about the differences between domesticated and wild animals, how to care for pets, the different types of food they eat, and their living environment. Real-life connections were made as the keiki shared about their own pets and how they take care of them. Finally, the keiki closed out the investigation with a family engagement activity where they created Pet Homes using recycled materials.
