Hā Initiative Students Conduct Stream Table Experiment to Learn about Erosion!
This was an exciting week for our Hā Initiative students as they delved in the world of geology! Students learned about erosion and weathering in a hands-on experiment by creating a stream table made from household supplies and the Delta Education Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Earth History Full Option Science System (FOSS) Kits. The stream table is a scale model of a river in which erosion and weathering can be observed over a short period of time. The students observed the movement of the soil and sand as water ran through their stream table. Students repeated the experiment multiple times and discovered that no two runs were the same. In doing so the students learned and explored how the water eroded the ground to form canyons, deltas, and other landforms. Students then compared the model they made to real life places using Google Earth and discussed the different ways natural land formations occur. This was a fun, hands-on experiment that allowed our students to study geology in action!

HCAP’s Windward District and RYSE Hawaiʻi Join Forces to Help At-Risk Youth
In efforts to spread the word of HCAPʻs programs and services, the Windward District Service Center visited the Residential Youth Services and Empowerment (RYSE) Hawaiʻi Kawailoa Youth and Family Wellness Center in Kailua to provide outreach services.
RYSE Hawaiʻi is a non-profit organization operating a youth access center, safe temporary living space, and shelter services in Kailua, Oʻahu for youth ages 14–24. RYSE Hawaiʻi also refers their youth to partner agencies for additional services such as HCAPʻs Nā Lima Hana: Employment Core Services Program. Through this partnership, HCAPʻs Windward District Service Center is able to provide the RYSE youth with employment services including job readiness training, interview skills, and resume building.
Our Windward staff are excited to develop this new partnership and feel strongly that change starts with the youth. By giving our Hawaiʻi youth the opportunities and support to succeed, we hope that they will be able to improve their lives and the lives of the next generation.

Head Start Keiki Make Healthy Eating Choices!
Our HCAP Head Start children are learning healthy eating habits at an early age through the USDA Child Nutrition Program so they can make healthy food choices and live a balanced lifestyle.
In this activity Rhyzen from Keiki Country II, placed strawberries in his water as a fun way to add color and flavor! This was a great alternative to a sugary drink! Good choice Ryhzen!
