Kumuhonua Participant Shares Gratitude for Permanent Housing
The Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center would like to congratulate program participant, Sharesa, for securing permanent housing. Sharesa started her journey at Kumuhonua in May of 2019. Since then, she has been working hard to stay on track toward self-sufficiency by attending all of her meetings with her case manager as well as maintaining full-time employment, and visiting her disabled son weekly. There have been many trials and tribulations in Sharesa life but despite the many challenges encountered, she has received her Section 8 voucher and secured permanent housing in September 2023. Sharesa shared that after four years of being homeless and being in shelters, she is happy to finally have a place to call her own. Sharesa also stated that she is forever grateful for all the help she received from Kumuhonua staff and her case manager, Carolyn.
Kumuhonua staff is very proud of all the work that was put into making this a successful transition for Sharesa, and we wish her the best of luck in this new chapter of her life.

Nā Lima Hana Establishes a Strong New Partnership
HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) team and the Leahi District Service Center are thrilled to announce a new partnership with the Salvation Army’s Family Treatment Services. This branch of the Salvation Army offers housing and support services for women in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse and provides both residential and outpatient transitional facilities. This particular program is designed to empower women with children by delivering resources and services such as supportive housing, mental health, and vocational training programs.
The ECS team along with Leahi District Service Center staff will be providing monthly in-service opportunities to two of the homes. During this in-service, staff will assist the women with wraparound services such as tuition assistance opportunities, career development, and Head Start resources for their children. During the first meeting, the staff was able to complete 12 intakes and enroll a few ladies into vocational training programs. Others were referred to several employment partners for possible job leads and others were assisted with planning for their transition back into the community.
This is deemed to be a successful partnership and a great way to uplift and empower this vulnerable population. HCAP will continue to provide wraparound services and the utmost care to the people of our community.

Head Start Attends the Hawaii Pregnancy, Baby & Kids Expo
HCAP’s Head Start ERSEA Manager Emily Gaza and Head Start Assistant Director Suzie Uyeda participated in the Hawaii Pregnancy, Baby & Kids Expo held at the Ward Villages Shops back in September. They interfaced with a multitude of local parents, expectant mothers, and their children while sharing information about our Head Start & Early Head Start programs. The largest, free prenatal to preschool event in the state, spanned two days of shopping, networking, information sessions, and giveaways focused on expectant mothers and young children.
