ECS Client Serves Lahaina Through New Job

Rayana first reached out to the Windward District Service Center while transitioning out of the Women’s Correctional Facility. Rayana expressed her need to find employment, a steady place to live, and other resources to help get her back into the routine of life outside of prison and to make sure she stayed on track.

Rayana was immediately placed into the St. Stephen Diocesean Center for safe and sober living while going through HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS). Through ECS, she completed Job Readiness Training where she created her resume, built interview skills, and received job referrals. Within a week, Rayana interviewed with and was hired by Pacific Environmental Corporation (PENCO) as a Technician who assists in hazardous clean-ups. HCAP’s ECS program helped provide Rayana with her work attire so she could begin right away.

Rayana has successfully kept steady employment for over 90 days. Rayana is currently working in Lahaina, Maui, cleaning the hazardous debris left from the devastating fire.

Kumuhonua Participant Receives Life-Changing Assistance

Kathleen has been a client of HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) since November of last year with her son, Kristopher, who is affected by severe developmental and behavioral disorders. Through working with his case manager at KTLC, Kristopher was able to contact adult disability services for assistance in finding adult daycare and ongoing support from mental health professionals. Meanwhile, Kathleen was working alongside the LEP/landlord engagement program to find units within their price range but was facing income barriers. However, Kathleen and Kristopher applied for low-income housing from the Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) back in March, and with the assistance of their KTLC case manager, Makamae, they completed their reasonable accommodation application in September for transportation assistance to the HPHA office.

The participants are currently housed in HPHA. Kathleen expressed her gratitude to Makamae for the opportunity to be a part of Kumuhonua and is thankful for the resources and services that she received. She expressed that since her husband passed it has been difficult to be the sole caregiver for her adult son but she is thankful for all that HCAP has done for her and her family.

Head Start’s Ukulele Fun with Mr. Ramos

Salt Lake Pre-Plus Head Start had the pleasure of having a parent volunteer his time to sing and play his ukulele for the children. The children were engaged and delighted to have Mr. Ramos play several songs during our afternoon circle time. They enjoyed dancing and moving their bodies and also learned a new Hawaiian Song! The children loved it so much that they asked if Mr. Ramos could come back another day!
