HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start to Return to In-Person Learning

Following a dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases on Oʻahu during the month of August, the HCAP Head Start and Early Head Start program made the decision to shift to remote services starting on September 1, 2021. Since then, Head Start’s innovative strategies and commitment to keeping children and families engaged have ensured the best services possible have been provided in the safest manner possible.

With health and safety as a top priority, HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start will be shifting back to offering in-person services. Beginning November 2, 2021, classrooms and Home-Based program options will once again provide in-person services to all children and families.

HCAP Head Start Director Grant Kogami stated, “I am confident that this time away has helped to prevent further spread of the Delta variant in our classrooms, households, and communities. With the decline in overall case counts, going back to in-person services is as justified as much as it is needed. We have always been committed to providing the communities we serve with our absolute best, no matter the circumstances, and this transition aligns with and continues that commitment.”

HCAP Programs Give Struggling Family Hope for the Holiday Season

Ermie’s household was struggling with severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic when she reached out to HCAP’s Leahi District Service Center for assistance. Both Ermie and her husband enrolled in the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program in September with high hopes for their family’s future.

Since enrolling in the program, Ermie and her husband have both completed Job Readiness Trainings, which provided them with information and helpful tips on financial literacy, resume development, interview skills, and mapping out their long-term and short-term career goals.

Ermie’s husband is now job searching with the help of Nā Lima Hana, while Ermie was inspired to pursue vocational training to enter the dental field. She is now taking courses to make her goal a reality through HCAP’s partnership with Hawaiʻi Dental Assisting Academy

In addition to employment services, the family was also referred to participate in the annual Adopt-a-Family Christmas program at HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center. After dealing with the hardships brought on by COVID-19, Ermie and her family are now on the path to a happy holiday season and a brighter future ahead.

HCAP Head Start Staff Attend Virtual Family Engagement and Cultural Effectiveness Conference

This month, 41 HCAP Head Start staff members attended the 2021 Family Engagement and Cultural Effectiveness Conference. The three day virtual conference provided an opportunity for staff to learn about and apply new knowledge and skills related to parent engagement and family wellness in the context of various cultures and traditions.

HCAP strives to offer professional development opportunities to all staff members. Encouraging these learning experiences not only strengthens our organization, but also delivers continued benefits to the children, families, and overall community we serve.
