Windward STEM Students Make Mini Whirlpools To Learn About Gravitation Force

This week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Windward STEM Exploration Center, students explored the concept of “force.” How does force interact in different environments, especially when gravity is introduced? Students participated in an “interactive tornado in a bottle” project to solve this question. They discovered that gravity is the natural force that causes physical things to move towards each other; the force that caused things to fall towards the Earth. The rotating water in the bottle creates a vortex as gravitational force pulls the water from the top bottle into the bottom bottle.
Success Story From Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center

Hector came to Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center after being homeless for twenty-three years in Honolulu. Upon entry to the program, he adjusted well to transitional living, and was able to address his health and mobility concerns. While in the program, he received a motorized scooter through his medical plan. Hector was able to save money, and recently secured his own apartment in Pearl City with help from Kalihi-Palama Health Center and Hawaii Public Housing Authority assistance programs. This is the first permanent housing situation he has experienced in over two decades. This is a huge accomplishment for Hector and he thanks all who were involved with his coordination of care! We wish him the best of luck in his new home!
Starbucks Managers Give Seminar to Youth Services on Ways To Land First Job

Starbucks Hawaii Managers paid a visit to the Youth Services C-Base students to mentor them in a “talk story” session on an array of work related topics. Speaking from experience, they were able to provide the students with some insight on what’s necessary to fill out an application, build a comprehensive resume, get their first job, and retain that job. Starbucks will continue job mentoring throughout the month of September.
Windward District Service Center Prepares for Kupuna Independent Life Series

The Windward District Service Center staff are finalizing preparations for the new Kupuna Independent Life Series to be held at the Waimanalo Kupuna Housing this fall. This week, staff passed out flyers and talked with housing residents to build participation in the program. Staff attended the residents’ general meeting on Thursday afternoon to answer questions and provide agency program information. The new program was modeled on the existing and successful Kupuna Independent Life Series offered at the Leeward District Service Center. Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program Helps New Client Secure a Job

In August 2016, a client on work furlough came to HCAP for help in finding a job. The Kalihi-Palama District Service Center enrolled him in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program, a program that prepares individuals for employment and helps them to transition into the community. After enrolling in the program and completing Job Readiness Training with the Kalihi-Palama community workers, the client proceeded with job search, resume building, submitting online applications and interview preparation. The program was also able to provide a personal hygiene kit, bus pass, and interview outfit from the on-site Kalihi-Palama Clothes Closet. After a few weeks of job searching, and with the continued support of the community workers, the client was able to secure a job and is currently employed! He will continue working with the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program until he feels confident and stable. He is also eligible to receive job support and retention milestone incentives through the program. Our client expressed his gratitude for all of the support the program gave him to secure employment.
The Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Programs offers support through goal setting, resume building, job search, interview preparation, computer skills classes, mock interviews, and other services to help individuals find employment. If you or someone you know is looking for assistance in obtaining employment, call your local HCAP District Service Center to speak with a Community Worker about enrolling in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program.
Head Start Children Visit Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii

Jefferson Pre-Plus Head Start children enjoyed their visit to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii’s learning center. At the learning center, children were made aware of the harm that plastic brings to sea animals and coastlines. The children were able to sift through sand to look for plastic and view photos that showed how plastic affects animals.
