Program Description:

Established in 2014, the Kūpuna Independent Life Series is an educational, community-based approach to assisting kūpuna (seniors) 55 years and older to “age in place” by providing client-centered health intervention, group support, and guidance for living productive, independent lives. The Kūpuna Independent Life Series emphasizes senior-centered health programming to rural and low-income areas of Oʻahu, including preventative education needed to sustain seniors who wish to
remain in their own homes or senior residences for as long as possible.

The Kūpuna Independent Life Series’ primary objectives are to:

  • Provide health education for seniors relating to disease prevention, management of chronic disease, and other consequences of aging
  • Educate seniors on the importance of exercise and ways to stay mobile and active
  • Provide hands-on lessons in nutrition and healthy eating
  • Offer a venue for socialization among seniors.
