Last Friday, children from Pauoa Head Start received brand new books from Aloha Books. Aloha Books is Ohana100’s latest project in remembrance of the late US Senator Daniel Akaka. Mary Mildred Chong, Senator Akaka’s widow, gifted the books to the keiki. Aloha Books will be giving new books to all children enrolled in Head Start programs throughout the state. They will also provide books to kindergarteners at all DOE public schools and charter schools throughout the state of Hawaii. For more details about the Aloha Books and Friday’s special event, you can read the KHON2 article here. Since 2013, Ohana100 has been giving free books to children in Hawaii and New York.

Family of Three Obtains Permanent Housing

When Abel, his wife Valerie, and their daughter moved into the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center in May 2017, the family had minimal income and lacked support. With a lot of hard work and determination, Abel secured stable income to support his family while Valerie attended school to obtain a certificate as medical assistant. On July 25th, with enough savings accumulated, the family obtained permanent housing and moved out of the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center.

Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Job and Permanent Housing

Alison first heard of the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program when she was living at the Na Kolea Transitional Housing. At the time, Alison was unemployed; she had worked for a cleaning service company, but the reduced employment hours left Alison in a tough bind.

Eager to obtain full-time employment with another company, Alison completed intake at HCAP’s Leahi District Service Center and enrolled in the ECS Program soon thereafter. As part of the ECS program, Alison completed Job Readiness Training.

In August, Alison obtained full-time employment as a janitor. Now that Alison was working 40 hours a week, she was able to save money for rental deposit and first month’s rent. Next month, Alison will move out of Na Kolea and move in permanently into Island West Apartments.

Kalihi Residents Receive Ready to Learn School Supplies

This year, HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center was able to service over two hundred families with school supplies through the Ready to Learn (RTL) school supply drive operated by Helping Hands Hawaii. One of the families receiving basic school supplies is Sotera’s household. Sotera is relatively new to the Kalihi neighborhood. Sotera has received wraparound services from a variety of HCAP’s programs, including the Income Tax Services/ Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, the Toys for Tots Program, and RTL. Sotera and her husband take care of their grandson, who is still in elementary school. Every year, they apply for RTL at the nearest HCAP District Service Center and pick up school supplies for their grandson.
