Kalaeloa Partnership with Pearlside Church

The Kalaeloa District Service Center and the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) started a new partnership with Pearlside Church. As part of this partnership, the Kalaeloa and KTLC staff had the honor and privilege of meeting with Lina, who provided a box of pre-packaged hygiene supplies to issue to clients in need or while doing outreach. During this visit, HCAP staff briefly discussed the needs of those in the homeless community, and how the two organizations could continue to work together to reach as many individuals and families as possible. HCAP is grateful to have the opportunity to work with such a great organization and looks forward to future collaborations.

Hā Initiative Learns about Bones

Last week at the Kaʻiulani Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, the students continued learning about human anatomy and physiology. They used diagrams to understand the bone structure in the human arm and hand to compare and contrast that to the bones found in the legs and feet. The class then played “bone trivia” to test the student’s knowledge of the bones they studied. The students also put on a short “reader’s theater” play about the human body to learn about the different systems that make the body function. Finally, as the Hā Initiative does every Friday, the students focused on their math skills and continued working with fractions.

Family Advocates Receive Trauma-Informed Care Training

This week several Head Start & Early Head Start Family Advocates attended a training at Kids Hurt Too Hawaii. They learned about their program and the services provided to children and families experiencing grief and trauma. They observed their support space and walked through what a typical session would look like when children come in for support. Discussions were had with the co-founder Cynthia White, about how to support families and children experiencing not only loss of the parent/guardian but also loss in separation (incarceration, divorce, abandonment, foster, kinship, adoption, etc). Cynthia also shared that understanding grief and trauma can help Teachers assist children in the classroom and Family Advocates and support staff better assist families.
