On Tuesday, Ed Campos, Genara Campos, and Ponce Galera, members of the “Thank God for Golf” (TGFG) club presented HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center with a monetary donation. Throughout 2014, the approximately 40 members of the club met on a monthly basis to golf together. Club members made donations each time they golfed. In October 2014, TGFG held a Golf Tournament as their main annual fundraiser. In total, TGFG collected approximately $16,000, which they donated to 4 non-profit organizations. Mahalo to TGFG for choosing Kumuhona as a recipient, we are honored.

Head Start Children and Families Celebrate the Holiday Season

In celebration of the Holiday Season, Head Start Makalapa I and II children and their parents participated in a Family Engagement craft workshop. Families had a joyous time through parent/child interaction. After completing their art projects, children were given a bag filled with goodies and parents chose clothing items their families could use. The items were donated by people in the community, who wanted to give to those in need.

STEM Students Learn the Science behind Snowflakes

Windward STEM Exploration Center students recently learned the science behind snowflakes. They learned how each snowflake is unique, and then hand made their own out of paper. They then hung their paper snowflakes up around the classroom for the holiday season.

Taking this learning opportunity one step further, students learned how to make an actual ice crystal formation. They began the second part of the snowflake science unit by watching a Brainpop video about how snowflakes form. Each student had the opportunity to make his or her own snowflake out of pipe cleaners. Then, they dipped the pipe cleaners in a boiling water and Borax solution. The next day, the students saw that an ice crystal structure had formed! Students wrote a STEM journal entry about how the water molecules moved closer together as the solution cooled, expelling more of the Borax crystals to build a magnificent ice sculpture.

Head Start Children Learn About Fun and Nutritious Eating

The children at our Waiau Pre Plus Head Start became chefs for a day. They learned how to make a fun and healthy parfait snack using fresh fruits, granola, and yogurt. Amanda, a parent at Waiau Pre Plus, put this activity together to teach the children about healthy and nutritious foods. Amanda is an advocate for healthy, nutritious foods and is currently attending culinary school full-time. She hopes to become a chef one day.

HCAP Client Benefits from Multiple Services

Photo of Afe
Fa’afe went to the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center in September to apply for the Emergency Crisis Intervention program for assistance in paying her past due electric bill. HCAP staff informed her of the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services program that could assist her with job training and submitting job applications at various companies. She and her adult son returned a month later to join the employment program. She applied for and was offered a job at Roberts Hawaii in October. Afe is so thankful for the boost Community Workers Tasia and Robin gave her, and is excited to continue to working towards becoming self-sufficient.
