Former Kumuhonua Residents Find Permanent Housing and Reunite with their Son

Photo of Kumu_Norman and Wendy

Norman and Wendy arrived at the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center after losing their residence of 20 years due to an increase in rent. Unfortunately, they had no family or friends that they were able to live with and were on a fixed, limited income. While living at Kumuhonua, both Norman and Wendy took great pride in taking care of a section of the grounds. And despite the challenges they faced, Norman and Wendy were able to secure permanent housing and reunite with their son in Waianae. They received financial assistance from Kalihi-Palama Health Center and moved into their new home in June! Now, the couple will be focusing on their health and enjoying being with their son. Congratulations Norman and Wendy!

Hā Initiative Students Build Bridges

The Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students at the Windward STEM Exploration Center explored the world of engineering and built bridges. First, the students learned about the five basic bridge designs: arch, suspension, cable-stayed, span, and girder. Then the students discovered that the compression of the bridge is a pushing force and tension is a pulling force. After the lesson, the students were challenged to design and build a bridge. The students drew their bridge design, developed a list of materials for the project, and began to build their bridge. They can’t wait to see the final products!

HCAP Staff Attend the Final Summer Meal at Kukui Gardens

The Kalihi-Palama District Service Center and HCAP Head Start staff attended the final Summer Meal at Kukui Gardens. During the event, HCAP staff provided information about HCAP’s services with the local community. The Summer Meals Program provides children and teens, ages eighteen and under, with free lunches Monday to Friday throughout the summer. Helen Lee, Resource Coordinator for Kukui Gardens, invited HCAP along with a few other organizations to promote various programs and services. Ms. Lee is a member of the Kalihi-Palama District Council and she is also Kukui Garden’s Site-Coordinator for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) Program. This was a great way to end the summer and get ready to go back to school!

HCAP Head Start Teachers Attend Trainings Before the New School Year

HCAP Head Start Teachers and staff are getting ready for another exciting school year! HCAP Head Start staff received mandatory training in which they learned about blood borne pathogens, child abuse awareness, agency policies, civil rights, and the USDA guidelines. The Head Start Teacher Mentors also presented information on the 2nd Step curriculum, which HCAP Head Start currently uses to instill strong social and emotional skills in young children. Fully equipped with information from these trainings, the HCAP Head Start Teachers and Assistants are ready for another wonderful school year!
